Brown Coat/Traveling Coat

Since I made the Refugee dress to wear to the Return of the King premiere, I wanted to make the Traveling Coat because together they made a complete outfit. Also, it was going to be at midnight in December which was going to be cold.

This coat was also made out of dollar-a-yard fabric (I love Wal-Mart). The pictures don't show the color exactly right. It the coat is actually a little darker brown than shown. It was actually made out of the same pattern as the Refugee dress just modified to be wider at the bottom. I muslined the sleeves and the end result turned out nice. The fake fur around the hem, sleeves and neck was also bought at Wal-Mart. The fur, however, was a big problem because it didn’t come in strips. It only came in squares for $3 each. So, I bought 3 squares and then spent hours cutting them into 2” strips and then sewing the strips together. The longest part was sewing the fake fur to the coat. Endless hours, cramped hands and thousands of needle pricks went into the fake fur edging. But in the end, it turned out really nice. I don’t think it would look the same without the fur. And with that many hours invested, I think that I like the coat even more.

I made the brooch out of a foam sheet that I got at Hobby Lobby for 87 cents. After staring at a picture of the brooch for hours, I made a pattern of one of the four "points." I then used that pattern of cut out the foam with an Exacto knife. I also cut out a circle of the same foam to use as the dark blue stone in the middle of the brooch. Then, I painted the main part with some gold fabric paint that I also got at Hobby Lobby. The circle got painted blue with some cheap paint that I bought at Wal-Mart. I glued the circle on top of the main gold design and then glued a brooch pin to the back of it. It doesn't look perfect because I am not an artist, but the brooch looked great at the premiere.

This is her coat...

And here is my coat...
